Rehearsal with RVC

I had a rehearsal/brainstorm with the "Reverse Violin Company", yesterday evening. We listened to eachothers tunes, looked at lyrics and gave suggestions. We also wanted to record a new song, based on a lyric I wrote. It was hard to find a suitable "genre", so we decided to try with drum loops to get into a particular groove. After a few rock oriented drum samples, we settled with a more electronic beat and then the creative energy got bigger.

I played some bass lines on guitar. To make them sound more authentic, I played with my fingers, used a less sharp tone and we reduced the reverb. The actual sound came through the Korg ToneWorks AX3000G, on which I turned of the delay and reverb effects, so the sound is recorded dry, but with all sound-shaping effects included (amp simulator, compression, modulation).

Then we decided on two patterns/riffs, which formed the main song structure. Jan recorded my playings and added some vocals (partly parlando, partly sung) using Logic Express. The rough first part was recorded but now he has to come up with more detailed arrangement ideas.

The interesting part: we have a completely different approach to composing and recording. I like to think in patterns, riffs, loops. Probably the reason I like Ableton Live so much, so I even stopped using Cubase, although it still has features that are much less developed in Live. Jan, on the other hand, likes to improvise and records full songs in one take. This means that there is less repetition and that even the song structure can be vague at times. Combining these two methods is what makes it interesting.
