What Effects to use for guitar?

Apart from software, there is a wealth of possibilities for guitar sounds. From real amplifiers and stomp boxes till software plugins and combined software/hardware products.

Right now, I'm borrowing a Korg ToneWorks AX3000G from my brother, which is mostly a hardware guitar effects and amplifiers simulator. One machine with a nice range of sounds. Maybe I don't need to buy two or more amplifiers and effects at all.

This leads me to comparisons and right now I would like to learn more about the "Pod X3 Live" (http://line6.com/podx3live) and the "Boss GT10" (http://www.bossus.com/gear/productdetails.php?ProductId=941) pedals/effects boxes. They have a foot pedal (which I really like) and good amplifier and effects built-in. They should also be able to send a digital signal out for recording in a sequencer.

The Boss GT10 has a phrase looper, which is something I would really like to learn to use properly for live looping (although I might get along just fine using Live to do this). One guitar can become a full layered wall of sound, even when improvising and jamming.

Yesterday, I heard that the Phrase Looper in the GT10 is a very simple one. Not up to the level of the standalone loopers. Well, it might be better then nothing and the main reason to go for such a system is the effects and amp simulation.
